How to send packages via Royal Mail?

I probably sound a bit stupid asking, but I've never done it before and just started selling my stuff on eBay. I want to use Royal Mail 2nd Class Standard for delivering packages. Do I just take the package/item into a post office with some money or do I go to the Royal Mail HQ or something else?
