In Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix what was the prophecy?

I confused so I thought the prophecy was that neither of them could survive so one had to die, but the prophecy got destroyed so why is their all of a sudden a need to destroy The Dark Lord? Because can't they now go on because the prophecy was destroyed? This is probably a really stupid question but i've always been confused about it.
