How come I can't set a song someone sent me as a ringtone?

My friend sent me a song via BlueTooth or something and I was able to set as a ringtone. So i tried to send myself a ringtone by using my sisters phone to send it through a message and i was able to save it into the ringtones folder but it didn't have a "set as" option.
