My computer won't read my SD card or find my camera via USB?

I have a Macbook Pro, and I tried plugging my SD card directly into my laptop, it can't find it. I restarted my computer, and still, no luck. So I just put the SD card in the camera and attached the 2 using a mini USB, and you guessed it, no luck. Any idea what the problem is/ what I should do?
